MAMMOTH CYCLE RIDE TO RAISE MONEY FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Members of Lancaster Cycling Club are to cycle from Land's End to John o' Groats to raise money for three cancer charities one of which is North West Cancer Research Fund.
Thirteen cyclists are taking part in the gruelling 850 mile ride which will start on 20 May 2006.� It is expected to last for eight days.
North West Cancer Research Fund is an independent regional cancer research charity which has been funding research in Lancaster University for over a decade.� It makes �750,000 available every year for fundamental research into the causes of cancer and virtually all of this money is raised through voluntary efforts and donations.� A number of the Fund's voluntary committees are in Lancashire.�
The other benefiting charities are St John's Hospice in Lancaster and Cancer Care North Lancashire and South Lakeland.
All three charities were nominated by the Club's Treasurer, Simon Jones.� Simon said, 'I have recently heard about the invaluable work of North West Cancer Research Fund.� I wanted to include the charity in our fund raising ride because it funds research at academic institutions in the North West and the money is spent directly on research.'
'We are also supporting St John's Hospice and our local Cancer Care.� I have worked at St John's hospice as a gardener for ten years and I have witnessed at close hand its wonderful work by giving patients a better quality of life in the advanced stages of their illness.� Cancer Care, where I am also a gardener, offers emotional, social and psychological support together with advice and practical help.� All of its services are free.'
I want our ride to fight cancer across the board so that, in the future, charities such as these will not be needed.'
