Welsh Cancer Research Gets a Boost from Local Fundraisers

Hardworking volunteers will next week hand over a cheque for �77,228 to the North West Cancer Research Fund. The money will be given to the charity by the fundraisers at the North West Cancer Research Fund�s Annual General Meeting of its Welsh committees. The volunteers come from across North and Mid-Wales and will gather together at the University of Wales, Bangor on 2nd November to present the cheque, the result of the past year�s hard work.

John Lewys-Lloyd, Chairman of the North West Cancer Research Fund said, �The work of these volunteers is vital and we would like to thank them all for their efforts. The North West Cancer Research Fund has no full time, professional staff and so virtually all our money is raised by volunteers. Without them we would not be able to continue our fifty six year old tradition of donating 90p in every pound raised directly to research�.

The North West Cancer Research Fund is an independent, regional charity with a strong presence in North and Mid-Wales. It has been a momentous year for the North West Cancer Research Fund�s Welsh committees. In the last 12 months the fund made its largest award ever in Wales when the North West Cancer Research Fund Institute was created, a new centre of excellence for cancer research situated within the University of Wales, Bangor. Equipped to levels unparalleled in the UK, the Institute has already attracted cancer research specialists of international renown. Each of these scientists is to head a research team that will investigate different aspects of the fundamental molecular biology of cancer cells. It is hoped that the research will enable a better understanding of what factors cause the basic changes to the genetic code that cause cancers.
