BUSINESSMAN�S TRIBUTE TO FATHER EARNS BUMPER INCOME FOR NW CANCER CHARITY

A Blackpool man�s tribute to his father has generated record receipts for a leading North West cancer charity.
Roger Tretton�s efforts have helped earn �8,000 in the last six months for the North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF).
Mr Tretton founded the charity�s Blackpool fundraising committee in May 2006 just weeks after his father, Alan, died from cancer of the oesophagus.
Donations over the last half-year are significantly up on the previous six months and have provided a welcome boost for the charity, which celebrates its 60th birthday this year.
Mr Tretton, who is Chairman of Blackpool�s 10-strong committee, worked with colleagues to raise the sum from a wide range of charitable activities, combining traditional events with more unusual initiatives.
The programme included sponsored moustache-growing competitions with musical and dance shows.
Mr Stretton, who is also publisher of the local Blackpool Spotlight magazine, founded the committee with the help of his mother Madeline, who acts as Treasurer.
He said setting up the group was a fitting way to both commemorate his father and help make a positive impact on the fight against cancer. He added that Blackpool had rallied enthusiastically to the NWCRF cause.
�I am always delighted by the reaction we get whenever we hold one of our events. We try to do things which are a little bit different and really grab the community�s interest.
�It�s fairly clear from the fantastic sum we have raised in the last few months that we�ve struck a chord with local people. We are truly grateful for the wonderful support we�ve had because it does make a real difference.�
NWCRF, which is based in Liverpool, has given more than �25 million since being founded in 1948 to support pioneering research into establishing the causes of and treatments for the condition.
The highlight of this year�s anniversary celebrations is a lavish Butterfly Ball which takes place at the MacDonald Craxton Wood near Chester on June 28th.
